Now, don't get me wrong. I am not saying that Friends did anything to seriously challenge gender or class stereotypes.

Actually, Friends, the American version of Coupling, took both pornography and masturbation in stride. I recall an episode where Monica provided porn mags and freshly baked cookies for the men's consumption. (Ross remarked, "Cookies and porn? You're the best mom ever!") I also recall someone bursting in on Monica in the bathroom and her trying to explain what she was doing with the shower head. Not many sitcoms even acknowledge female masturbation.

It is not bread. It is Christ's body. FLESH! What do vegetarians do about the eucharist? (Supposedly alcoholics have drunk of his blood with no problems, or so I've been told.)

Thanks, Yoko. If one were celiac, would the church have to get gluten-free wafers for everybody? Would they set aside special ones for you? Would you have to bring your own?

I love posts about food, too. However, soup is something I will probably never cook for myself from scratch.

Yoko,

I find that there's no reason to eat quinoa if you can eat rice, bulghur, couscous, pasta, etc. I find it's a good substitute when I absolutely must have a starch as part of a meal or recipe.

Nutritionally and ecologically speaking, though, quinoa's pretty fantastic.

Also, it works particularly well in this dish... that kind of slightly musty flavor it has really harmonizes with the other ingredients.

Hey, you know I don't mind reading posts about food. :)

I've been underwhelmed by quinoa-- not that I don't like it, because the dishes I've eaten with it are good, but it just doesn't knock my socks off. Maybe I should give it another try.

And you've inspired me to buy a pomegranate this afternoon.

Oh god, I hear you on the hassle of cooking for one. And the hassle of watching one's simple carb intake. Add to those the hassle of being poor. So, last week, in an effort to stretch my dollar, I decided to cook what I had in the pantry and not go to the market. I ate red beans with barley for three days. Do you have any idea what red beans and barley do to someone who's just started taking metformin? I wanted to lie on the floor and groan every afternoon. It was a bad, bad scene.

Perhaps I will try this chicken thing you mention, although I don't see myself buying a whole chicken.
